Uplifting an Inn

The Snapdragon Inn

Room 5

This week's episode of Design Star on HGTV caught our attention because the challenge was to update a Bed & Breakfast on the Jersey Shore. The owners wanted to modernize the rooms and offer the amenities of a larger hotel but still maintain the warmth of their smaller establishment and of course the rooms needed to be durable. These were definitely thoughts that crossed our minds as we created our design plan for the Inn. Even thought they only had 2 days and 5 rooms, their budget blew ours out of the water. They also let each designer do whatever they wanted where we definitely wanted a cohesive look and feel to the whole project. However, no matter your budget or timeline, it is a challenging and very creative brief.  Of course, we had the added challenge of transforming a residential home into a commercial space which certainly brought it's complexities ;)

Unfortunately, when we took the before pictures, we didn't always get all the angles of the rooms
so we don't have the exact match for the After.

This time last year we were painting Bathroom 2

The Snapdragon Inn

May 26, 2010

This time last year we were very very busy painting the Inn in preparation for the floors to be refinished. There were all day shifts that lasted late into the night. On this very day last year, we posted about Bathroom 1 (which is now 2 after we realized the numbering system we used all through construction made no sense). All we can say is we are thankful that this summer does not entail the grueling work of last summer and are looking towards our exciting first summer season open!

Room 2 is a gem

Room 2 is a gem. The lovely clear light pours into its east facing windows and the calming color scheme create a relaxing space to be in. It is spacious, but still welcoming and has one of the larger bathrooms with a shower and an antique claw foot tub (that we refinished of course) to soak away the evening or morning or day. A recent guest of Room 2 left this wonderful review on trip advisor. Continue to read about some of the room details.
Just returned from a wonderful stay at the Snapdragon Inn. After many long work weeks in Boston, I needed some time away from the city to relax and refresh, this place was the perfect find.

My room was pristine and came equipped with a flat screen which streamed Netflix and Blockbuster movies (along with full service cable) so I was able to catch a few movies that I had missed in the theaters. Not only that, but the bed was THE MOST COMFORTABLE bed I have ever slept on. I woke feeling amazing and I didn't want to leave it!

The property was right along a beautiful lake, in a town that borders the Connecticut river, so the views were awesome. I especially loved the warm hospitality of the innkeepers. Their care made me feel at home- right down to the fresh cookies and milk before bed.

After: K80 and Velda worked their magic

First we stripped the floors and the walls(these were painted wallpaper walls) to lighten the room (no small task, right?). A few of the details in this room include a chair from Brimfield that K80 and her mom gave a second life to when they meticulously recovered it (in the highest humidity you could imagine) and now sits elegantly in the corner with a gorgeous tropical print that gives a zing of color to the mostly pale room but also ties together all of our room details. The lamps were another Brimfield score this last May and were so excited the way they bring in the turquoise of the tropical and work with the coral velvet that we placed behind the headboard to give it more elegance and depth. The blue Snapdragon Pillow pulls right into the Sevres Blue of the bathroom and the deeper blue swirl (also purchased in India at Fab India if you know the place and if you do, isn't it out of this world!) pulls from the tropical blues as well but also adds a contrast to the white of the bed. We can't forget the gorgeous photos by Leilani Bascom that perfectly compliment each room.

It is fun looking back on each detail of these rooms and the real thought and time that went into every single one and so happy we can now share them with you. Room 2 could just be the one for you.

Room 3: Before & After

The Snapdragon Inn

The wall paper stripping team in front of the fireplace

It isn't until seeing before pictures, that you can visualize all the work that went into each and every one of these rooms. We remember this room to be particularly difficult to get the wallpaper off because it had been painted over. In fact, we called it "Satan's Den"--it was that bad. It sure looks great now!

3rd Floor Hall: Before and After

(bathroom straight ahead and 2 rooms on either side)

(put up wall and made one bathroom into two and combined
rooms to make one per side)

the very cool ( but very old) wall paper we opted to strip

the very very tedious stripping process

building the Taj-Mawall (11+feet tall)

Taj-Mawall with lighting fixture, fire alarms, smoke detectors and other
commercial bits and pieces

I thought this was a particularly fun before and after shot of the the 3rd floor hallway. In order to build all the bathrooms in, we claimed some of the hall space. The smaller bedrooms were also combined to make one larger room per side (rooms 7 & 8).

Before, During, and After: Maxwell Perkins Library

We present, The Maxwell Perkins Library at Snapdragon Inn. It has gone through a bit of a transformation. We closed up a door (spa room will be on the other side), built new bookcases, stripped the wallpaper, re mudded, took down the drop ceiling, put up a new one, took out the old stove and put in a Vermont Castings Stove and made it look inviting. This wall paper was NOT easy to get off and I think Big Red spent days in there working on it but doesn't it look lovely. I think it is ready for book groups, literary conferences, and afternoon teas.

I think as many renovations projects go, you never take enough before pictures. We did take some and you get the idea but as renovations and decorations taper off, we need to clean up our hard drives and organize ALL of our pictures. Until that point, we will post what we can organize.

This is a photo taken at the open house of many of us with the family that called 26 Main home before we bought it from them. It was so exciting to see their faces as they wandered in and out of every room. Apparently at one point, each of their daughters mentioned to their parents that they wanted to get married at the Snapdragon Inn and we would LOVE to have them. Here are a few pictures of the rooms before they moved. I think the kids liked seeing the transformation of their bedrooms. It was so great to have them there to share the day with us. Everyone who has lived or visited 26 Main feels a connection to this lovely home.

Upholestry sneek peek: Tufted Blue Velvet Perfection

The weather in Windsor has been so so so so so hot hot hot hot and sticky but we are pushing through the heat to work and wanted to share a bit of what some of the team has been up to.

(they have since totally finished it)
We got this chair at Brimfield on our first trip and lookey here! Isn't it AMAZING. Thanks to K80 and her mom we have the most amazing collection of rehabilitated, re-loved, and re-envisioned pieces. This is just one but this one is incredible. This was a super soft blue velvet that we got on epic and foundational fabric shopping trip many moons ago. If you want to see it in person and sit on its soft blue velvet goodness, it will be in Room 4.

Hello beautiful floors!

The Snapdragon Inn

As you can tell, we can't get over how beautiful the floors are looking. We can get in on sock feet and begin cleaning up the dust and get back into the final painting and start into the plumbing. Anyone interested in helping us with some final painting projects. I promise they aren't as massive as they were. Here's to a productive and positive week all round!
